Abstract

The study investigated the antibiofilm activity of a complex comprising tea tree essential oil and surfactants produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis IMV Ac-5017, synthesized in the presence of the yeast inducer Saccharomyces cerevisiae BTM-1 in different physiological states (live and inactivated cells, as well as the corresponding supernatant). It was established that, regardless of the inducer state, the obtained surfactants in combination with essential oil exhibit pronounced synergistic activity and more effectively disrupt dual-species bacterial biofilms compared with individual components and mixtures of oil with surfactants synthesized without an inducer. The degree of biofilm destruction for Escherichia coli IEM-1 with Staphylococcus aureus BMS-1 reached 75–81%, while for the biofilm of Bacillus subtilis BT-2 with Pseudomonas sp. MI-2 the maximum destruction reached up to 98%, exceeding the effects of the single agents. The obtained results demonstrate the potential of combining biologically induced microbial surfactants with plant-derived antimicrobial compounds to enhance the effectiveness of controlling mixed bacterial biofilms.
