Abstract

Description

Data on the possibilities of using bacteria for the biosynthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) was summarized in the article. Various sources of bacterial isolation were discussed: soils (Bacillus cereus, Serratia sp., Paenibacillus sp.), industrial wastewater (Bacillus flexus, Escherichia sp., Stenotrophomonas rhizophila), marine ecosystems (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shewanella loihica), internal plant tissues (Brevibacillus brevis, Pantoea agglomerans, Streptomyces zaomyceticus), and others. It is shown that the level of bacterial resistance to copper ions varies from quite high (100 mM for Niallia circulans) to low (0.1 mM for Shewanella oneidensis). Furthermore, the biosynthesis of CuNPs by bacteria was considered part of the detoxification system in response to increased concentrations of copper ions. The main mechanisms of intracellular and extracellular formation of CuNPs were summarized. Enzymatic systems, particularly nitrate reductases and NADH-dependent reductases, as well as various bacterial metabolites — proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, and secondary metabolites, which can act as reducing and stabilizing agents for nanoparticles played key roles. Biosynthesis conditions and biochemical features of microorganisms determine the morphology, size, and stability of the obtained nanoparticles. Biogenic CuNPs possess specific optical, physicochemical, and biological properties. The main mechanisms of their biological activity include the generation of reactive oxygen species, disruption of cellular membrane integrity, release of copper ions, and damage to proteins and nucleic acids. Additionally, copper nanoparticles were characterized by high catalytic and photocatalytic activity, allowing their use in the degradation of organic dyes, pesticides, and other environmental pollutants. Data on the potential use of biogenic copper nanoparticles in the food industry were provided. One of the primary areas was the creation of active packaging materials capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi, preventing biofilm formation, and extending the shelf life of food products. They can also be used to develop biosensors for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms and their metabolites.
