Development of a hybrid analytical model to assess the impact of central bank digital currencies

Abstract

This paper proposes a replicable hybrid analytical approach to studying the macroeconomic signals associated with central bank digital currencies (CBDC) in the context of limited official CBDC statistics. A hybrid analytical model and algorithm for analyzing the impact of digital currencies on central banks are developed to estimate the macroeconomic impact of CBDC implementation using the case of Kazakhstan. The study applies Pearson-Spearman correlation analysis combined with k-means clustering to quarterly data for the period 2018–2024, using USDC as an empirical proxy for the behavior of digital assets such as CBDC. The results show a strong correlation between USDC circulation and inflation, money supply, and deposit volume, while the correlation with GDP and lending remains weak.
