Abstract
The dissertation is devoted to improving the efficiency of monitoring and automated control of aquaponic systems, which combine the cultivation of aquatic organisms and plants within a single integrated ecosystem, through the use of intelligent control technologies and data analysis. In the first section, based on an analysis of the literature, key methods for regulating biochemical parameters – such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates – are identified. Current engineering solutions for automating control processes are assessed, including the development of a three-level control architecture that integrates manual, automated, and intelligent levels. The use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for continuous parameter monitoring and integration with reinforcement learning (RL) agents is proposed, enabling adaptive responses to environmental changes. A structural model of the aquaponic system, a component graph, and path matrices were developed, which made it possible to formalize the relationships among subsystems. The “fish,” “biofilter,” and “plants” subsystems were simulated by constructing mathematical models describing growth, metabolism, and system dynamics. It was established that the stability of the system largely depends on the balance between ammonia production by fish and nitrate consumption by plants. In the second section, a mathematical model of the aquaponic system is developed that allows describing its dynamics, optimizing processes, and predicting system performance. The model is based on the principles of conservation of water mass, nutrients, and biomass, taking into account exchanges among fish, plants, and bacteria. The models include equations for concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and oxygen, as well as dependencies of fish and plant growth on environmental conditions. The main elements of the system are described: fish tanks, biofilter, hydroponic module, circulation system, aeration, and sensors. Mathematical models of subsystems—including liquid balance, temperature, water recirculation, the hydroponic greenhouse, and the aquarium – were developed. These models make it possible to evaluate functional efficiency, support automation, improve system stability, and determine optimal control parameters. In the third section, mathematical modeling of aquaponic systems as integrated ecosystems combining aquaculture, hydroponics, and biofiltration is conducted. The main elements of the system (fish tanks, biofilters, plant modules, circulation and aeration systems, sensors, and automation tools) and their interconnections within a closed loop are examined. Mathematical models of water balance, temperature, nutrients and oxygen, as well as the dynamics of biochemical nitrification processes and biomass growth, are described. It is shown that models based on the principles of mass conservation make it possible to reproduce key processes of substance circulation and transformation, and to assess the impact of environmental parameter variations on system productivity and stability. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that even small deviations – particularly in oxygen concentration or temperature – can significantly influence aquaponic efficiency. A study of the dynamics of a small-scale aquaponic system showed that stability and productivity are determined by the balance among fish biomass, biofilter efficiency, and plant growth intensity. It was established that fish biomass increases exponentially, generating a proportional waste flow that is transformed into nitrates in the biofilter. Plants consume these compounds, ensuring natural water purification and their own development. The optimal ratio of fish to plants prevents environmental toxicity and nutrient deficiency. Practical recommendations include gradual fish stocking, phased increases in plant quantity, and regular monitoring of ammonia, nitrate, and pH concentrations to maintain system stability. The fourth section highlights the importance of process automation in aquaponic systems for maintaining stable operating conditions. A three-level control system ensuring operational efficiency and flexibility has been developed. An automated control system for the main parameters – temperature, oxygen level, pH, and water flow rate – was created using optimization algorithms to increase energy efficiency. An intelligent control system based on reinforcement learning (RL) is proposed, enabling adaptation to environmental changes, automation of manual processes, and increased productivity. The implementation of IoT technologies ensures remote monitoring, integration with RL models, and maintaining optimal system parameters with minimal resource consumption. In the fifth section, a prototype setup of a control system for managing plant and fish parameters is designed. It consists of three main subsystems: water recirculation controlled by a programmable time relay; greenhouse parameter control (humidity, temperature, lighting); and monitoring of hydrochemical water parameters (pH, temperature, oxygen, ammonia, nitrates). An economic analysis of three scenarios of aquaponic system operation was conducted. The results showed that even basic automation significantly increases the economic efficiency of the system: profit increases by 33%, while the payback period is reduced by 1.6 years. RL-based control demonstrates the highest resource-use efficiency and minimal labor costs, although it requires higher capital investment. The most sensitive economic parameters remain product prices, crop yield, feed conversion ratio, and investment level. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the development of integrated models of aquaponic subsystems (fish, biofilter, plants) that provide optimization of nutrient cycles and water quality, as well as in the creation of a three-level control system based on intelligent algorithms and IoT technologies. For the first time, an intelligent control system based on reinforcement learning methods is developed, enabling automation of harvesting processes, reducing human intervention, and increasing the efficiency and productivity of aquaponic systems.
