Abstract

The aim of this review was to summarize current knowledge on the production of phytohormones and antimicrobial compounds by endophytic and rhizosphere bacteria and their potential application in sustainable crop production. Materials and methods. Scientific publications indexed in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases concerning the synthesis of plant growth-promoting phytohormones and antimicrobial secondary metabolites active against phytopathogens were analyzed. Results and discussion. In crop production, toxic agrochemicals are widely used to control phytopathogens and prevent significant yield losses. In recent years, the rapid development of biotechnology has stimulated growing interest in integrated technologies aimed at the simultaneous production of several target products within a single technological process. Plant-associated bacteria are capable of synthesizing phytohormones that stimulate plant growth, as well as antimicrobial compounds, including antibiotics, hydrolytic enzymes, and surfactants, which may serve as environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides. The main producers of phytohormone complexes and antimicrobial metabolites are endophytic and rhizosphere bacteria belonging to the genera Streptomyces, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas. Among the phytohormones synthesized together with other secondary metabolites, indole-3-acetic acid is the predominant compound. Antimicrobial metabolites include a wide range of antibiotics, while the hydrolytic enzymes produced are mainly cellulases and chitinases. The major surfactants synthesized by these bacteria are lipopeptides and rhamnolipids. Studies on the in vitro antimicrobial activity of synthesized secondary metabolites have mainly focused on fungal phytopathogens and were evaluated based on the degree of test culture growth inhibition and the diameter of inhibition zones. Considerably less attention has been paid to the antibacterial activity of antibiotics, enzymes, and biosurfactants. The vast majority of the analyzed studies were primarily aimed at identifying metabolites involved in plant growth promotion and protection against phytopathogens, rather than at developing technologies for their large-scale production. Conclusions. In summary, plant-associated bacteria are promising producers of phytohormones and antimicrobial metabolites for sustainable agriculture. However, most studies focus on metabolite identification rather than the development of technologies for their large-scale production and practical application.
