Abstract

Various bacterial genera have been investigated for the biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). These include representatives of the genera Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Paenibacillus, Halomonas, Lactobacillus, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas, Streptomyces, among others. Most biosynthesized SeNPs exhibit a spherical morphology, and their sizes vary widely (2—700 nm), depending on the specific biosynthesis conditions and the bacterial strain. Biosynthesized SeNPs display a broad spectrum of biological activities, which underpins their potential applications in diverse fields. In particular, they exhibit pronounced antimicrobial activity against a range of pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani, Candida albicans та Aspergillus spp. Antitumor activity of SeNPs has also been demonstrated in vitro using experimental models of various cancers, including breast cancer (MCF-7), colorectal cancer (HT-29), liver cancer (Hep-G2), and kidney cancer (CAKI-1). Among other biological effects, SeNPs have been reported to stimulate plant growth and suppress the development of phytopathogens, suggesting their potential applications in agrobiotechnology. The mechanisms underlying the bacterial biosynthesis of SeNPs remain insufficiently understood; however, current research has identified several key stages in this process. The core step involves the biological reduction of selenite or selenate to elemental selenium, a process that can occur both intracellularly and extracellularly. This transformation is mediated by various enzymes and proteins, including oxidoreductases, cytoplasmic and membrane-associated proteins. The stability of biogenic SeNPs is maintained by biomolecules bearing specific functional groups such as amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amide groups. In addition, bacterial proteins, amino acids, polysaccharides, and lipids contribute to the stabilization of nanoparticles by forming a biological coating on the SeNP surface, preventing aggregation and ensuring colloidal stability.
