Abstract

The study investigated the antibiofilm activity of a mixture of cinnamon essential oil and surfactants produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis IMV Ac-5017 in the presence of the yeast inducer Saccharomyces cerevisiae BTM-1 in different physiological states. It was shown that the use of live, inactivated cells, or yeast supernatant as an inducer in the cultivation medium leads to the production of surfactants with enhanced ability to disrupt dual-species bacterial biofilms compared with products obtained using a monoculture. It was established that the complex of surfactants with cinnamon essential oil over a wide concentration range (1.25–640 μg/mL) provides more effective biofilm destruction compared with the individual components. For the biofilm of Bacillus subtilis BT-2 with Staphylococcus aureus BMS-1, the degree of destruction was 34–98% (live inducer cells), 27–87% (inactivated cells), and 37–94% (supernatant), which is 4–27% higher than the corresponding monobiocides. The obtained results indicate the feasibility of using biological induction of microbial surfactant synthesis in combination with plant-derived antimicrobial compounds to improve the efficiency of controlling mixed bacterial biofilms.
