Today, it is difficult to imagine the process of learning foreign languages in higher education institutions without the use of various techniques, methods and teaching technologies. One of such technologies is scaffolding, an important strategy of which is a set of processes aimed at supporting students in their knowledge acquisition. The article describes in detail the technology of scaffolding, highlights the types of this technology, shows the main characteristics of the scaffolding strategy and the main goals. The authors also investigate the advantages and the possibility of using scaffolding technology in the process of mastering a foreign language, and set out to find out whether scaffolding technology contributes to the effective learning of a foreign language by students in higher education institutions. The authors also consider how this technology helps students to improve their knowledge of a foreign language, understand and master new material. In addition, the authors analyse an important method of this technology - "fading assistance", which is explained as a gradual decrease in the provision of intensive assistance from the teacher to the point where the student proves to be completely independent and autonomous in completing the task. The article also analyses certain aspects for the successful use of scaffolding technology in the classroom, and what teachers should pay attention to. In the article, the authors make a clear emphasis on the fact that we should not forget that the main feature of this technology is the principle of creating situations of success by the teacher in the classroom. According to the authors, creating a situation of success should help to avoid the difficulties faced by students on the way to learning a foreign language and help to level out such feelings as shyness, self-doubt, fear of making a mistake, fear of being ridiculed by classmates. According to the authors, the most appropriate teaching technologies for creating a situation of success when using scaffolding are: interactive teaching technologies; cooperative learning; collective group learning; situational modelling technologies; case method
