Processing microalgae into food products and biofuel using mechanical cell disruption methods

Abstract

A generalized machine-apparatus scheme for processing microalgae has been developed, which involves the disruption of their cells in a bead mill or by pressure homogenization. All products, except for supplements based on dried algae, require cell disruption by mechanical means – in bead mills or in high-pressure slit homogenizers. The latter are not advisable for use with filamentous algae. Moreover, there is a lack of data in the literature on the method and modes of such disruption.
