Biotechnology is being used to engineer and adapt organisms, especially microorganisms, in an effort to find sustainable ways to clean up contaminated environments. Environmental microbiology also offers clues to the evolution of degradation pathways and to the molecular adaptation strategies to changing environmental conditions.
